Artist Evaluation

For the Artist we are using a female ,brown haired character , this is as the song is a simple love song so we feel that the Artist should be dressed maturely but plainly , as the song is simple over dressing the Artist will not fit. In the flashback shots our Artist will be dressed modernly and comfortable , as this sort off appearance appeals to a middle class young audience. She will play the protagonist , with no specific stereotype. Hopefully from this our Artist will push the ideology that love conquers all , from beginning to end our song is a bout the changing ways of love that are happening to the Artist. These ideologies do link to our genre as our genre is pop , within pop many Artists sing love ballads and romantic songs.

Male Casting shots

Logo mock up

This is an idea of what we would like our artists logo to look like. I made it in photoshop using an image i got from google but for the real logo we will be taking our own images.
The bright red rose with the black and white background is significant as it is what we want our flash back scenes to look like. The connotations of the red in the colourless background shows how strong her love for this man is.

progress

Right now we are working on a suitable logo for our artist that we can associate with her and use across all of our ancillary tasks. Over Christmas we will be perfecting this more and filming the theatre performance and flashback sequences. Also we should be taking still photos for our album cover.

Logo

We have been looking at several fonts on the website 'www.dafont.com' which we could use for the logo of our artist. We have had to keep in mind that the font will have to reflect our artists brand image and suit the image she is trying to portray through her music.

Here are some examples of the fonts we have been looking at:

Eloise hannah's messy handwriting

Eloise Journal

Eloise Learning curve

Eloise Edwardian Script

These shots are like the type of album cover that would represent the type of artist we have , in need of a background cover these pictures show exactly what we would like our product to look like , many of these shots are simple and are talking with the artist , this is the type of album cover we would like as it is classy and fits well with our logo and artist.

Planning

Location Shots

We have chosen locations at certain places such as the:

  • fields
  • woods
  • resturants to choose our flashbacks.

Props- we are creating a photo album's with the artist and the partner so we can show in the video thier emotions and the moments they spent together.

Shamayla

Tuesday 8th December

Today we have been reaserching and planning on our logo. we have reaserched and looked at Robbie Williams and also joss stone to get our ideas for our own young artist for our album.
SHAMAYLA HUSSAIN

LOGO

Our ideas - For props such as a clock, woods, the artist next to the wall, and even on the road.

All these different props can make a really unique and individual logo. We want to create a logo which is unique but different. I have been reaserching on joss stone on her logo but they are very different when you look them. You would think that this particular picture would work so well.

You would think that this particular picture would work so well with the dark colour contrast. The different use of colour work so well on this image and you wouldn't think it would work as well with dark and dull contrast. It works so well with artists image on a footpath.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS
This is such a strong image and shows such a strong image of the artist. This image has a unique twist to it for the audience. and it will catch the eye of the audience straiht away because of the vibrant red and orange colours which have been used and this gives us ideas for our own logo and how we want to make it unique and different. The image of the artist has been used well for the album which is used.

In logos it is not necessary to have an image it can have the title of the artist or the title of the songs.

Ancillary task location ideas.

For our ancillary task we are making an album cover for our artist and we want it to portray her innocent character and young image. We have seen a few photos that we would like to use as inspiration.
Sam and Hannah

Album research

File-Lungs_FatM.jpg we are starting to think about the logo that we want our artist to have. I have studied certain artists and their brand image such as Florence and The Machine. They are a London based, indie pop band and this is the cover for their first album ''Lungs" This is affective because of the imagery used of the lungs on her chest. It also links with the artist's individuality as they are very alternative with their songs and image. Most of the songs on the album are depicting violence and death.

I also looked at Robbie Williams as a successful british pop artist. He has always been portrayed as a rebellious character and his latest album cover is a good example of this. Him sat on the motorcycle and looking away from the camera is effective as it gives him a careless look like a rebellious character would. Also the album is very simply set out as he is not an extravagant star, he comes across as very down to earth and common. Therefore his album has to link with that.

Weekly update 7th december 2009

Over the weekend i shot various clips of different watches and clocks to be used in out final production , this was rather hard as being able to spin a clock is very tricky , i managed to shoot around 5 or 6 different types of clocks.

I also created the photo album with the pictures needed for one of the shots , this is now waiting to be filmed.

Filming/shooting .

The first shoot was on the 3rd of november 2009 , in this shoot we filmed the 9th shot of our music video , this took time due to the unpractibility of the clock we used , it was very tricky to keep the clock still whilst twisting the arms on the clock on the back , Sam filmed this in a close up shot. After much time i finnaly got the clock steady leaving us with minutes of footage.

Props: Clock
No costume plans where nessecary as only the clock was featured.

Brief.

Our music video features a female singer/songwriter who will be singing the song "When will it end". The song itself is a very slow romantic song , which features the artist performing and the love of her life , the songs lyrics are about a past break up between her and her boyfriend and the lyrics talk much about the pain she is still feeling from this break up.

Our video firstly features the performance of our artist singing alone on an open stage. Many shots of her performing will be filmed with her performing with a guitar , this guitar represents peace as its plays a low sound. As well as close ups with her performing without showing the guitar , there will also be flash backs of the artists past life with the love of her life. These flash backs shows the commitment and love between the couple. The song lyrics talk much about how the memories bring her pain , through the music video the flashbacks go from strong love to the break up with the last flash back being of the artist looking at memories with the love of her life.

The flash backs that we film will then be edited in to black and white with certain aspects of the flash backs being in colour for example : Our first flashback will show only red rose but the rest of the flashback will be in black and white.

Example

one-object-black-white-photo-200X200.jpg Taken from WWW.EHOW.COM

This will be the same for many of the flask backs. In the 2nd flash back our artist will be given a rose buy her boyfriend , this rose will then be featured in the production we will then show this rose in a vase throughout the performance shots these will be shown in slow motion until at the end of the production the rose petals will have all fallen off showing the vase with just the stem. A line of the lyrics talks about "time speeding faster" for this shot we will be showing different clocks at a fast pace.

At the end of the production we will be showing her boyfriend sat in the seats of the theatre under the spotlight as our artist looks at the empty vase , her boyfriend will then fade out while looking at the vase before she has chance to see him watching . For the final shot our artist will then have the spotlight turned off and she will be in darkness.

Animatic analysis

Our animatic storyboard is 1:41 and our song is 3 perhaps 4 minutes long. So our shots from the animatic will obviously be longer when we shoot the real footage. We are planning to record the performance scene in the video several times from different perspectives. For example, from long shot, close up, behind the artist etc.

Watching the animatic back we think that all our shots will work and flow successfully.

CASTING

We have chosen the singer for our music video, we have chosen Hannah. We think that she is good for this role as she looks like we think the artis
t should look like and could easily carry the brand image that our artist needs to create. We are still looking for our male actor. We have placed posters around college to see if anyone is interested.

Here are some photos of some our our props we are going to use for filming:

Song Lyrics

After searching for a song we liked to use for the music video, we chose this song which we selected from a creative commons website.

ERICA SHINE

When Will It End

Written by Rye Randa and Erica Shine

@ 2009 Rye Music

So many years gone away

Stranger beneath my skin

The tape in my head plays on and

on and on and on

Shows me what I’ve become

And I’ve tried to forget you

So many times I’ve let you go

Chorus

When will it end?

When will this life be mine again

When will it end?

And when I ever get back to good

Time speeding faster

Beneath my feet

Moments have passed me by

Fantasy’s falling

Dreams are slipping away

How did it come to this?

And I have tried to forget you

So many times I’ve let you go

Chorus

Free me From the darkness

So I can be myself again

Can I learned to turn the page

On this chapter so

love will come again

Chorus

The reason why we have chosen this song is because we like the song and we felt we could make a video which would compliment the words being sung. The song is about relationships- a break up with her boyfriend. She is talking about her life after the break and how she has tried to forget him and let him go. Therefore our ideas for our music video will revolve around a narrative then performance. The narrative will focus on the relationship of the couple, and her performance will be in a theatre/stage. We think this will work because it reflects the lyrics of the song.

Audience

Week 22-27th November

This week we have been finishing our blogs sharing the tasks between our group. We have also been looking at locations for our music video. We are currently starting our story board and we are getting all our ideas together we will upload a copy once we have finished it.

Ivy

Target Audience.

To give me an idea of what our target audience would be i used a table that we use in class. (G-gender,R-race,A-age,SS-socio-economic status).
G - Female
R - any race
A - 16-25
S
S - C1/B
This gives us a simple idea of who we are aiming our music video at.
If we go off 'Young and Rubicam's Cross-cultural Consumer Characteristics' the idea that there are four categories of audience based upon these aspirations: Mainstreamers, aspirers, succeeders and reformers. The audience for our artist would be either mainstreamers. As mainstreamers are people that seek comfort in the familiar and this song has familiar conventions of a typical pop song and also people can relate to the lyrics.

Sam

Ideology.

The messages and values our text will push at the audience is that everyone needs time to heal and no one should be ashamed to miss a relationship as our artist is trying to get over her last boyfriend, and she is finding it hard. I'm sure a lot of viewers will be able to relate to this. Another ideology that our video will give is that it is better to have loved and lost than to not have loved at all. This will be portrayed through the flashbacks, showing how happy she used to be. Although she is hurting now they are memories that she will treasure forever.

These messages can be described as dominant ideologies as they are ones that we are all familiar with as they have been pushed through many media texts before. Also we want the ideologies of our video to be dominant rather than alternative as we want a mainstream audience for our artist.
It also links with the generic conventions of a pop video as most pop songs are about love, aimed at teenage girls and are not controversial. But we can not know for sure how the audience will read these ideologies because although messages are encoded into the media texts, the audience can decode these messages how they wish. This is the theory by Stuart Hall of the encoding-decoding model.

Narrative

Monday, 23 November 2009

Representation

The characters in our music video will represent love. The theme of our music video is about breaking up and dealing with life without her boyfriend. It represents how easily teenagers fall in love and then they break up and get heart broken , basically how typically teenagers can act and feel in and out of a relationship.

In the media industry stereotypes have a very big impact on us. In the media industry we have four main stereotype groups which are:
  1. Middle Age
  2. Teens
  3. Adults
  4. Child

The main stereotypes which are a negative image are teenagers. The media creates a negative image such as being scruffy, having an attitude problem, Being lazy and violent. Basically, the media creates the image that teenagers don't have a sense of maturity therefore we are perceived to view teenagers with a negative attitude.

Walter Lippmann

Walter Lippmann's 4 functions of stereotypes are:
  1. A short cut
  2. An ordering process
  3. A map of the world
  4. An expression of our values and beliefs ( as a society)
Even though stereotyping is not the best way of representing places\people or even ideas they are usually negative, exaggerated, simplified representations that generalise groups of people. Its essential in the media industry particularly in the need for economy. This is why they use this so often in the Media Industry. This was the outline of Walter Lippmann.
