Audience Feedback Questionnaires

Shamayla's Evaluation

I worked in a group of four Samantha, Ivy, Hannah, and me. We created a music video for teens. Our music videos about how teenagers fall in love and break up, we show how difficult and struggling it bees to cope with a broken heart. My main jobs were filming, make-up and costume, designing the C.D ancillary task and taking photographs these were my main jobs through making the music video. Our product appeals to young teenagers because this is the age that people fall in love and are in relationships.

Genre
As a group we decided to focus on pop genre
And this was our main area that we will concentrate on.
The genre developed in the mid 1950’s and it was a softer version of the popular rock and roll genre. As a whole group we felt that the song we choose is the right genre for the song. In any kind of music video we get codes and conventions. We expect these elements and rules to be used in the product and in the genre as well, although these rules can be broken or altered to create a whole new and different product. Conventions of any music video genre are the typical rules which are followed or sometimes broken and are what the audience expect when watching a music video. Music videos include typical location, typical characters, mise-en-scene, typical narratives, typical media language, and typical ideologies all these should be included in a music video and we made sure we included this.

The conventions we used in our music video, coloured lights, rose, performance, typical characters boyfriend. It was vital to use typical elements because we recognise these elements because we use these elements in our everyday life. We added a guitar to make it different but it’s very important to add sometimes which is something new this adds a new flava to the video and for our audience who will watch it.
The innovations were likely to prove successful because the audience was used to it and knew what to expect however the changes helped the audience so that they do not get bored of watching the same thing.

Branding
The brand image for our music video is a sweet, innocent and a talented young female musician. The logo we created is a very girly, elegant and has simplicity to it which helps you focus on the image instead of the photo. Our logo is maintained and used throughout, the colour of the logo is white back, front (brush stoke). The editing that we did of the photocopy and it’s effects for the front and back for Eloise makes it stand out a lot which makes it a classy, elegant, and bold look to the whole image that we want to put across to our young audience. Also the magazine advertisement we worked on included cartoon filter on photo shop so that the album is not abscured by photo. This will make the CD stand out and make it different (Sony BMG focuses on pop music).

This was the font we choose to use for our logo

This is the website what we used for the logo.

Audience
The main areas we wanted to target was teenagers. The fact that teenagers end up in deep relationships which are hard to get out from or forget and this is a very delicate age where they fall in love and become into a relationship with the opposite sex. This is a very good target audience that we choose to become of the large mass and a large audience which listens to music. Which will be rock, hip pop, romantic songs and also keeping in consideration teenagers are financially beneficial because of the lack of responsibilities they have no bills to pay for they are provided with everything and will likely to spend it on money on music so this target audience is a very good choice.

Throughout our work we used a variety of technologies which are: Apple Mac, Digital Camera, Jamendo, Blogger, Slide share, You tube, Word lyrics, I tunes, Video camera, In Design, Final Cut, Moodle, Risk assessment form, phone and Da font. These are the technologies we used throughout our work. The most effective and the most creative technology for me was Photoshop. It was my first time using it which I found really excited. In Photoshop I could almost create what ever I wanted which was fantastic because on some programs you can’t even get the tools. I used Photoshop when I was working on my ancillary task. I used all the effects, the tools to create the perfect tool. Firstly you have to make a copy of the image to do this I had to use the command + j key once I did this we see a copy of the background of the image which is called layer one. Before the cutting out of the image then I had to turn off the background layer . after I had reached this point then I had to click on the eye. It seemed nothing had happened to the image at all but secondly I had to cut the image I had to click from the left side and click around the whole image and put the last click point where I started from thirdly I had to save the image after I had done this then a created a background in IN – Design then I had to place out the cut-out image from Photoshop and resize the image that I wanted and lastly just added text that I need to. It did influence us into creating different construction to produce final product.

We got a really positive outcome and we will keep in consideration to improve our product as our audience has said.

Creative Technologies And Skills that I have learned
I gained a lot of different skills using different sites and used it effectively for our work. We did a lot of research and planning to get the perfect product that we needed for our music video. There were a lot of advantages when we used the Photoshop because we create the image that we wanted and had all the tools needed to do this but the disadvantage was when I cutted the image and couldn’t get in to the deep bits it got really frustrated but got there in the end. It was new to me and it was challenging to new programs that I never used before, but it got easier once I was in training and started to use it often. I found slide share to be fantastic because it gave our work that boost to show it differently and it looked better. The programmes such as Blogger, slide share, you tube we found it was better to use and easier as well, in design was quiet confusing at first but did not limit on creativity and produced our logo.

It advanced my skills on my project and made me even more confident on my work so I could work efficiently outside of college when I was set to do a job. It also created a professional product at the end.

Conclusion
The end product that we produced was the music video that we had planned. I am very happy at the outcome and to the response we got for our audience. We had to work really hard to get to where we are now and the confidence and the skill to work in group has worked for me as a person. We did a lot of research and planning before we went there to film. The best part of our project was filming and creating our image. I really enjoyed working in a group. This was my best piece of work that I have produced and shown new skills which have been improved.

Ivy's Evaluation

Media Evaluation- Ivy Sala
Introduction

The aim of my Media Coursework was to produce a media product of either a music video, including three ancillary tasks or a teaser trailer also with two ancillary tasks. I choose to do the music video and I worked in a group with three girls: Samantha, Hannah and Shamayla. We took equal turns with each aspect of the project to ensure we had all gained experiences on every technology. My main contribution to the project were filming the project and creating the CD cover and magazine along with Hannah and editing the music video. Our finished project is a music video featuring a female artist named Eloise; it is a music video which shows Eloise and the break-up with her boyfriend. We felt that the target audience for our product is young teenagers to late teens from the ages of 16-25.

These are our final products from our ancillary task:

Our final video product can be found on one of the earlier posts.

Genre

The genre of our project very much depended on the genre of the music that we had chosen. The song ‘When Will It End’ originally sung by Erica Shine is a pop song about a break-up with a boyfriend and how she is getting over this break-up, consequently the genre of our music video is pop. We found this song on the website (http://www.jamendo.com/) where the tracks can be used, as long as they are not for commercial purposes.
From the beginning of this project we had made sure we made a considerable amount of background research into similar products, artist, CD’s and magazines. The research that inspired me personally was the artist research I did into similar genre artists to Eloise. I looked at artists such as:

  • Regina Spektor and her songs such as ‘Us’

  • Natasha Bedingfield and songs such as ‘Unwritten’

  • Leona Lewis and songs such as ‘Happy’

  • Kelly Clarkson and songs such as ‘Since U Been Gone’

  • Taylor Swift and songs such as 'Love Story'
When carrying out the ancillary tasks I looked at album covers from various artists similar to Eloise to see if I could gain some inspiration or ideas on how to make our CD cover, inside pages and the magazine advertisments. These are just some of the CD covers that I looked at:

Regina Spketor 'Soviet Kitsch'-This album is effective in looking creating and supporting her different and disctinctive personality and music. She is known as having a unique voice and personality and I think this album shows this. The cut out of russian dolls again, supports the name of the album. The contrast between the dolls being in colour and Regina being black and white makes Regina stand out which is what an album should do by promoting the aritist.

Florence + The machine 'Lungs'- This album above supports her brand image of being a unique and creative music artist, and I think this is something we could incorperate in our album. The simple but effective logo also does this, by showing that is she artistic wit hthe 'handwritten' look. The colours in this album are interesting using very blue and greens which are very natural and 'forest' kind of colours these can be seen as showing her natural beauty. The lung's on the photo takes the album's name literally and I think this is something which we would like to use in our album, we have already taken several pictures of Eloise which are influenced by the Song 'When Will it end' which includes the idea of time.

Taylor Swift- Love Story-This album shows the protagonist in the a dress and it portrays a sort of fairytale image which appeals to the younger female audience, which is in my opinion Taylor's target audience. The font of the 'Love Story' are effective in creating a sense of femminity and classy look which is a look Taylor is going for. I think this album cover is effective because it promotes her brand image which is that of an innocent, girly artist who appeals to younger female audiences and from this I have learned that it is important for the album cover to make sure it promotes the brand image the artist is going for and to appeal to their target audience which maximises salesCodes and Conventions of music videos
Codes and conventions are used in all studies of genre. They are the expected rules which are found within a certain genre. These rules are sometimes broken or changed so that the end product is different and fresh and sometimes even to create a new product altogether. It is vital that these rules are used because it ensure that the target audience consume the product, as it is what the audiences like and expect to see. To put it simply, familiarity sells.
Codes and conventions present in music videos. These expected rules or elements are what audiences look for and it is what defines a certain genre or product. Codes and conventions are used so that the audiences know what to expect when they are watching a certain genre of film or playing a certain game. Codes and conventions can be split into certain categories, Andrew Goodwin writer of Dancing to Distraction (2003) wrote that there are several elements to music videos and these can be spilt into six points:

1. Genre characteristics

2. Visuals/Lyrics

3. Visuals/Music
4. Need to sell artist
5. Intertextuality

6. Voyeurism (Pleasure of viewing)

According to Goodwin the conventions of music videos/promos are that:

There is a relationship between the lyrics of the song and the what you are seeing on the screen- In the music video we have produced, we have tried to do this, as the lyrics relate to Erica’s experience of a recent break-up with her boyfriend, and on screen apart from her performing you see memories/flashbacks of times she had with her boyfriend before they broke-up.

The demand on record companies for lots of close-up shots- We have definitely included this element in our project as we have includes several close-up shots of Eloise singing and even extreme close-up of Eloise’s mouth and eye

Particular music genres having own style: This is reflected in our music video as pop videos commonly use the performance element in the video showing the artist singing and we have done this in our music video.

Here are some conventions that I added:

  • Typical Location: Music videos tend to have one or two locations, and are either filmed in a studio or on location. In our music video the locations were the park and restaurant where the flashbacks took place, and the theatre where the performance part of the video was filmed.
  • Typical Characters: It usually includes the band or artist. In our music video Eloise the artist was used and also her boyfriend in the flashbacks.

  • Typical Mise En Scene: These include costumes and make-up, musical instruments, lighting and non- diagetic audio basically everything that is placed in the frame. We used lots of mise en scene elements in our music video, for example the rose in the performance and during the flashbacks was used to symbolize Eloise’s love that she had for her boyfriend.

  • Typical Narrative: The narrative in a music video can include just the performance of the artist/ band, or a narrative or both. In our music video we decided to use both the performance of Eloise with flashbacks narrating the story of the break-up with her and her boyfriend which relates to the song.
  • Typical Media Language: This was used in our music video as the soundtrack dominates the music video and the performance follows and narrative follow the lyrics and meaning of the song.
However, although the idea of codes and conventions are important in media products it is important that a product does something different or new, because this is how the product sells and gains new and larger audiences. By including something that the audience did not expect will keep the audience interested, and by adding something new it could widen the type of audiences that will consume the product. This ultimately maximizes profits.

Codes and Conventions of Magazine Adverts for Albums

Codes and conventions are used when producing magazine adverts for Albums. Certain rules are followed to ensure that the advert attracts the right type of audience and sells the album. For example a magazine advert for a heavy metal band will be muchg different than a magazine advert for a pop band. This is because they have to appeal to their target audience, people who like that certain music and are likley to buy the album.

This magazine advert for a metal band is made up from dark colours such as blacks, greys and dark red which are associated with this type of music. The photograph of the man is very dark and myesterious which reflects the bands brand image and the genre of the music. The font is also, gothic like this is effective as it goes well with the genre of the album being sold on this advert.

This is also proved in this magazine advert for tour dates of metal and rock bacnds Alice Cooper and Motorhead, both adverts uses similar colours consisting of reds, greys and blacks to portray the rocky and metal themes.

However you can see a clear difference in the magazine adverts for albums of pop and indie bands. This is how:

This magazine adertisements for Gwen Stefani's album is very different from the two above. Firstly the colours are bright and stand out and her logo is girly, yet portrays a sense of high maintenance and femininity of her personality to her brand image which is something she tries to promote with the logo, clothing and the crown.

The colours used in this advertisments such as bright pink and bright blue make tha magazine stand out and reflects her bradn image as being girly. The position of her photo makes her seem a strong and independant woman. Her clothing is provocative and this is done to attract the target audience such as young women and the male audience especially.

Question 3: Audience

Target Audience
Media texts are usually produced to generate money for the institution therefore all the products need an audience that the institution can target in order for them to start making money.
A target audience can be split in into several groups: GRASS
GRASS stands for Gender, Race, Age and Socio-economic status (Usually class depending on your job) Audience profiling can split into two categories:
-Demographic Profiling: This is when a audience is grouped together depending on things such as age, gender, class, economics, religion, geographical area etc.
-Psychographic Profiling: This method of targeting audiences assumes the audience have certain needs which need to be met (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs)

For our project we decided that this would be the target audience

  • Gender: Female

  • Race: Any·

  • Age: 16-25

  • Socio-Economic Status: C1- Skilled non-manual workers ( Trade and supervisory jobs) C2- Skilled manual workers (Blue collar workers)
This is a good audience to target as teenagers and young adults are right for our product financially: they are the group of people which have the most dispensable income which means they have the money to spend and could buy the album. Also they are a large audience which means there will be more sales. A secondary audience could be more the younger girls who Eloise may appeal to ages 8-15.I produced a questionnaire (Shown Below) which I handed our to potential target audiences when they watched our final project. The audience questionnaires as well as their feedback were very useful to see how realistically how product would sell in the real business world. The audience questionnaire were very positive highlighting what we had done well and also showed that people picked up on what messages we were trying to get across to the audience. The audience feedback was also very useful as it showed areas in which we could have improved on and gave good constructive criticism.

Video of Audience Feedback on Final Product:

As a group we tried to attract/address our target audience in our video project, by firstly the brand image of Eloise. As Eloise appeals to young and teenage girls, her feminine and unique style we gave her in the clothes she is wearing, make-up as they are in fashion and it’s clothes that young teenagers would be seen wearing. This makes her seems like she is one of them, and that is why it would appeal to the target audience. The song ‘When Will It End’ appeals to the target audience also because it is a song about a break-up and it is something that teenage girls can relate to and understand and because of this it appeals to them. The fact that we used a female artist also generally attracts the female audience as they may feel inspired by her and want to be like her. We also tried to attract the audience by shots we used in the music video. The shots of the artist who is seen spending time with her boyfriend and that sort of subject is something the target audience of our music video may be becoming familiar with and this is why they may like this video. On our ancillary tasks I tried to attract the target audience by using a bold font our her logo which is just her name which makes the audience remember her, the use of large photographs of the artist on the CD cover as well as the magazine album, addresses the audience as it shows what this product is for, who it is about and who it is trying to reach out to. Her fashionable style is also visible in the photographs which may attract teenagers

Summary of Audience Feedback

Looking back at the audience feedback I carried on potential target audiences was useful in getting an insight of what other people thought about the project. I think that overall the product gained a positive reaction from the audience which is shown in the pie chart results on the audience feedback PowerPoint. This has taught me that when making a product like a music video the audiences already expect things from it and if they don’t see this, it can sometimes cause a negative impact of the media product. I think that the ancillary task was successful in what it was meant to do- attract the audience, when watching people looking at my CD cover and magazine it certainly cause some interest which I think is a positive outcome. The music video I think was also successful attracting the audience’s attention and most of the people I talked to enjoyed watching this which I think is a good attitude to the product. However now that I look back I can see some things that I would have changed or done differently to improve my project, most of these things were shown from the audience feedback told me. Firstly, I would have liked to include more flashbacks, possibly of the couple actually break-up I think this would have worked well in the video. I think that also some of the shots weren’t as varied as I wanted them to be and I would have liked to have changed them. As I look closer I think that sometimes Hannah who plays Eloise, doesn’t always look like she is singing the words of the song, and I think that if I had a chance to improve it I would have tried to make sure that she did look like she was singing every word. Overall, I am proud of the outcome and the audience feedback made me even more positive about the project we produced.

Question 4: Use of Creative Technologies:

Some of the technologies and software used in order to produce this product were totally new to me, however, some I had previous experience on.
Programmes/Technologies/Software used:

· Apple Mac Computer (Used before) – Editing, research and evaluation
· Final Cut Express (Not used before)-For editing film project
· InDesign (Not used before)- To make the magazine and CD

· Photoshop (Not used before)- To edit photographs for the CD and magazine cover

· I-Movie (Used before) – to make our animatics

· http://www.blogger.com/ (Used before) - to write up or progress and to note down research.
· http://www.dafont.com/ (Not used before)- To look for fonts
· http://www.jamendo.com/ (Not used before)- This is where we found our soundtrack
· http://www.youtube.com/ (Used before)- For researching other music videos
· PowerPoint (Used before) – To demonstrate the audience feedback results
· Microsoft Word (Used Before) – For evaluation
· Cannon Video camera and tripod- (Used before)- To film our project
· Stills camera (Used Before) – to take the photographs for our ancillary tasks

Some of these technologies proved to be challenging firstly actually learning how to use FinalCut Express was quite difficult and how to remember how to do certain things. On FinalCut Express, me, Sam and Hannah edited our project, we cut our clips up using the razor blade tool and put them on the timeline so we could put them all together, the problem that occured whilst we were editing was that we had several clips, and to distinguish them from each other we wanted to rename all of them differently, however the programme would not allow us to rename one clip different from the others therefore this caused some confusion and it took time to find the exact film clips we were looking for. We also made the mistake of putting lots of hte film clips on differentrows of the timeline, and beacause of this our timeline was messy and it was difficult to edit. A drawback of this programme was when I filmed a clock going round for an hour. The fastforward effect could not fast forward the clock fast enough for it to be used in the music video. The software allowed us to use effects such as black and white on certain clips so that the audience could differentiate from the past and present. The transitions were helpful in breaking up the clips and the 'Dissolve' transition was used to show that a flashback was going to occur which helped the audience realise what was happening. When doing our ancillary tasks I again found Indesign and Photoshop difficult to use at first- but I soon learned how to use them. These programmes allowed to edit the photographs before we could put them all together in InDesign. In photoshop I used colourgrading on the photot of Eloise in the forest especally as I wanted the green of the forest to stand out. I think that the 'photocopy' effect on the back cover of the CD also worked well as it highlighted Eloise's brand image of unique and different. InDesign allowed us to pu togetehr the magazine and the CD cover and I think it was useful how there was an option where you could open a new document the size of a normal CD, which helped save time measuring CD's ourselfs.

Conclusion

Overall, I believe that this project has turned out to be a success. I think that the thourough research and planning which was done before starting our video project and ancillary tasks helpef us in gaining background information and we learned quite abit in what we were going to be doing for the next 12 weeks. Looking back at the products, firstly the music video was successful, this was supported with the positive audience feedback. I also enjoyed making the ancillary tasks and I think it payed off when I heard such positive feedback from the audience. I think that both the video product and ancillary products were similar to a real products and I think that they would be rather successful in the market today what the audience feedback said, and I am very pleased how these products have turned out. I along with my group have spend lots of hours working on this project and have enjoyed learning new things and seeing the project develop and imporve day by day although ur project is not perfect I believe that it is a good project and this is supported by the feedback we received.
